This 1878-S U.S. Liberty Seated “Trade” Dollar is certified and graded Cleaned - AU 55 by ANACS (American Numismatic Assoc). This coin is well struck and lightly toned. A few minor abrasions can be seen.
This 1878-S Trade Dollar was one of those minted between 1873-85, to be used in circulation in the Orient, and to compete with other countries dollar sized coins. These trade dollars were legal tender in the U.S., until 1887. About 4.16 million of the 1878-S coins were original minted. In 1887 the law authorizing trade dollars was repealed, and the U.S. Treasury redeemed and melted many of them.
